8 ways massage may help Parkinson’s

As a massage therapist I have come across many different health conditions over the years. I have had a number of clients that have Parkinson’s. Some of these clients have come to my therapy room in Hempnall Green, near Norwich and I also visit some clients in their own home around the Norfolk area.

The clients I have had all report feeling some benefit from their treatments. It is best to discuss with your GP or consultant whether they think massage is appropriate for you and I am always willing to work alongside other health professionals to ensure you get the maximum from your therapy.

Massage Therapy

Here are 8 ways that massage treatment may benefit someone with Parkinson’s.

  • REDUCES  PAIN

Patients who have received massage therapy have found it helpful in managing their pain especially of their neck, upper back and shoulders.

  • IMPROVES  CIRCULATION

People that have Parkinson’s can tend to have cold hands and feet due to poor circulation.

  • REDUCTION OF MUSCLE SPASMS,

Patients that have undergone clinical trials found a reduction in muscle spasms and reduction in tremors after having a treatment.

  • ACCELERATES  REMOVAL OF TOXINS  AND  WASTE

Constipation can be common amongst people with Parkinson’s and massage can assist in helping to remove toxins and waste from the body,

  • INCREASES  FLEXIBILITY AND  RANGE  OF  MOVEMENT

Massage may help to keep the body moving and reduce rigidity.

  • IMPROVES  SLEEP,

This occurs due to reduction of muscle spasms, less pain and the body is in a more relaxed state to encourage better sleep.

  • NATURALLY  INCREASES  DOPAMINE,

Massage, especially deep tissue massage, can aid the brain to naturally boost its dopamine levels as cells are stimulated during the treatment.

  • LOW MOOD AND  DEPRESSION,

It is very common for people with Parkinson’s to also have depression. Receiving a massage can have a calming, balancing effect on the body and the mind.

RESEARCH – Research from the Touch Research Institute in Miami in 2002 found that patients experienced improved daily functioning after receiving massage treatment.
